Happy Mother’s Day! Here we go! May is here and it’s time to get things rolling down here at the lodge. It started in the month of April; the meat raffles have started to attract members again and it looks like people are starting to come back out. Good signs are showing. We all know that even though we had a very mild winter, this has been as tough a winter on everybody as I can remember. So there are signs that we are coming back around and we want to see you. We have so many events planned and they’re not just the same old things. On the first weekend of the month, May 5th, did you know that the Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo fall on the same day? We did and we have planned a double event for the day. Taco's and Bonnets - yes bring your best looking bonnet for the Kentucky Derby and win a prize. Where else can you sip mint juleps and eat taco's? Nowhere but here, so get on your saddle and get on down here. There will be entertainment until closing. Smoking at the lodge has continued to be an issue that won't go away. Well, we will have the outdoor smoking room completed very shortly. Perhaps we have dragged our feet a little bit with the mission and I apologize, but the venue will be completed soon. And just a reminder to everyone that Beginning June 1st, the entire lodge inside will be smoke free. There will be no inside smoking anywhere inside the building. May starts our New Year as officers and with that come some new officer's and a few others relinquish their duties. To all the new and old officers, I want to say thanks and welcome. I’d like to thank one in particular, Charlie Maligno. Charlie has been an officer of this lodge for over 12 years in some capacity and is giving it a rest (for a while) I hope. I just want to say thanks Charlie for all your service; it did not go unnoticed. Thank you Dave and Pops for putting on a great Sunday Brunch – it was a big success. We will have another Sunday Brunch on the 20th – the same day as the membership meeting. The Family outing will be on July 28th this year – See you there! Lastly, membership was down a little bit this year. It was down a lot at one time through the course of the year, but we rebounded well in the end. But we can always get better so if you have a friend or family member you want to sign up, we want them too! We have many new ideas for events this summer, so come on get down hear them. Dear Brothers and Sisters, May is finally here. May 1st starts the Moose Fiscal year and that is also the time the officers of the lodge begin their respective terms. First, I’d like to thank the board of officers who just completed their terms. A great deal of time and effort goes into the job and I can appreciate that as well or more than anyone. We have done some great things this year and have laid the foundation for even more. That of course would include Suzie and the WOTM board of officers. The WOTM are the back bone of this lodge and I don’t even want to think about where we would be without you. It was a pleasure working with each of you. Great Job all of you! I’d also like to thank all of the incoming LOOM & WOTM officers for the commitment they took and the mission they are about to embark upon to help make this an even better lodge for all. I am excited to see the quality of officers beginning their new terms and look forward to working with each of you. Every June, each lodge is required to nominate 1 candidate each for Rookie of the Year, Moose of the Year and Moose Legionnaire of the Year. Certain criteria need to be met in order to qualify and then a write up the candidate and their accomplishments must be submitted to Moose International. Our 2011 lodge nominees were Dick (Poppi) Travers for Rookie of the Year, Kenny Guilfoyle for Moose of the Year and Tom Rizzo for Moose Legionnaire of the Year. Congratulations to each of you – the nominations were well deserved! At the Mid-Year Convention in March, the winners of those awards were announced for the MA/RI Association. I am pleased to report that Kenny finished in the top 5 in the MA/RI Association. Great job Ken! I am also very pleased to announce that Poppi won Rookie of the Year for the whole MA/RI Association! He is now a candidate in the running at the National level, the results of which will be announced at the Fraternity’s Annual Moose Convention in Tampa in June. Way to go Pops! Good luck at the National level and I will keep you all posted. Dave Childs and Poppi put on quite a Sunday Brunch last week. Great job guys! Thank you very much for your hard work - it was a huge success and we will be doing it again from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 20th, the same day as our membership meeting. Why not come down for a great meal and you can hear what’s going on in the lodge too! Speaking of brunch, don’t forget our annual Mother’s Day Brunch on Sunday, May 13th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Let the Men cook for you for a change! It is free to all Mothers of lodge members, all WOTM members and their children. So bring the whole family down to enjoy some good eats. Sorry Gentlemen, you will be charged $5.00 for your meal but Father’s Day is coming up next month! Saturday, May 5th there will be a Cinco de Mayo / Kentucky Derby party at the lodge. It promises to be a lot of fun so I hope you can make it down. There will be $1.00 Tacos and $2.00 Coronas among other things. Dress Mexican or wear your favorite Bonnet for the Derby as there will be prizes. There will be Moose Races and a DJ afterwards for your entertainment. Come join the party have some fun with us! The Moving Wall Ceremony to honor those who have fallen in Iran and Afghanistan will be held on Saturday, May 26th from 10 - 2 pm. On Memorial Day, May 28th, the Lodge will once again be participating in the Weymouth Parade and following that, we will hold our annual ceremony at the Front St. Gravesite in Weymouth. Hope you can attend these. As a reminder, on June 1st, Smoking will not be permitted ANYWHERE inside the lodge. The outdoor Smoking Area should be completed by then including a TV out there. Also beginning in June, the WOTM of the Moose will be entitled to a free drink when they sign up new members in the same manner as the men currently do for the “Bull Moose”. We will also begin alternating the “Moose of the Month” parking space with the WOTM. One month the space will go to the LOOM, the next month to the WOTM. I hope to see you at the lodge. Dear Co-Workers, I am writing this to you one day after our Installation ceremony on Sunday. The newly elected and appointed officers and chairpersons had a wonderful day with our family and friends to ring in a new year for the WOTM ! The men also had their installation and we all shared a great luncheon afterwards ! For those of you who were unable to attend, I encourage you to attend next year. The ceremonies for both men and women remind us of what our mission at the Braintree Moose Family Center is and that is a mission of “Service”. I want to thank Mary Iacovelli, Frannie Johnson, and Chris Rimovitz, our past regents for officiating our installation. We could not have done it without you ! When I first joined the Moose, my aunt Chris Rimovitz sponsored me. She told me that volunteering and running for the position of Jr. Regent would be “fun” ! She said I “wouldn’t have to do to much”! Ha !! Now look- who would have known that years later I would be serving as your Sr. Regent. Well, because of her sponsorship, her dedication to the WOTM and our lodge, this month’s Co-Worker is Chris Rimovitz. Over the past month she has given both myself and the officers the help “behind –the- scenes that we needed to prepare for this new year. She is an inspiration to many of us in office and a dear friend to all ! Thank you Chris !!!! (Auntie!) May is Membership Retention Month and we need to increase our numbers and bring back those that may have let their dues lapse ! I am challenging all of the women to enroll at least ONE new member this year ! (Don’t forget you can still get your next year’s dues free if you sign up 2!) But imagine what we could do if we doubled in size !! So don’t be surprised if you get a “friendly-reminder “ call from one of the officers or our Committee Chairperson, Donna Lewis if your dues have lapsed. Please take a look at the calendar of events. This weekend 5/5/12 we have a big Cinco-de-Mayo Derby Day at the Moose Races ! Wear your biggest sombrero or your best Derby hat! Check out the flyers for more details!
